Theory and Media: Protest songs - Monae Monday 13th May
L/O: to investigate a theory and make links to specific products
Theory of oppositional gaze and how the women are looking directly at the camera and staring with direct eye contact to defy the patriarchy of white supremacy, ideologies of how they aren't objects but valued in our society
The intersectionality which is defied due to the main protagonist / singer of the video being black and independent, juxtaposing the patriarchal. view of the white being in full power and control
Theory and media: Baudrillard and articles Monday 3rd June 2024
To investigate a theory and collect key examples for analysis to develop understanding
The interview between Sharon and Gary provides a nice conversation and drama. It could have been scripted as the camera angles, script and drama all come together. The talking may be too forced as the conversations may be too extensive about relationships and life which seemed fake especially as there is only two people in the scene
Simulacra is a place where we are experiencing a world which we may never have experienced before e.g Killing Eve with the MI5 where hardly any of us have ever experienced that police lifestyle, so we may be forced to believe that the world is real since we have never experienced anything different
Postmodernism/ Hyperconsciousness - where it is letting you know that it is a media text Breaking the Fourth Wall and looking or talking to the audience
Tuesday 4th June 2024
Gender performativity - where roles are ritualised and performed over and over again to fit into a stereotypical role and becoming naturalised in our society
Sex Education - There is a stereotypical gay character who wears make up and stereotypically flamboyant in his costume and body language - facial expressions, mannerisms. There are more trans characters in the later seasons an we get to explore new identities and lifestyles of more characters
Heteronormative is where straight heterosexual relationships are seen as normal and how it is the 'normal' mode of sexual orientation. With the main characters, they are assumed to be straight and in a heterosexual relationship.
Thor is explored as the stereotypes of men are challenged and supported. Thor considers himself to be the strongest of all the avengers, yet he is created to have a 'childlike innocence' and be in some vulnerable situations
Theory and Media: Hall Representation Tuesday 18th June 2024
L/O: to investigate and collect key examples for analysis so develop understanding
The article talks about Ms Marvel and her pakistan culture and background, how prayers and views of religion are incorporated into her daily lives and how it sets an important message presenting positive views to the audience of how good nature
Social /historical context - me2 movement and the power of the woman talking about their previous experiences and progressing to more feminist views - Hall with representations of powerful women and refraining from patriarchal men. All female production themes
Cultural - ethnicity and progression to multiculturalism - Kirby Howell and Sandra Oh
Drinking and having a night out being fun. Iconic red buses and taxis
Political - Positive LGBTQ+ and multiculturalism that are the opposite of Donald trump and protests his views
Eve- somewhat relatable and messy ,hard worker, tired but also relatable, determined, subverts patriarchal views of dependent women
Villanelle - typically feminine in her clothing and actions - shopping and with sleeping with two men- subverts with her cold feisty moves - hairclip and hospital scene
Hospitals and the office in M15 is typical and very formal
Older men are powerful and strict , however Villanelle is more powerful than Konstantin
Historical - Demonising Russia with Villanelle , espionage traits and how the old views of England Vs Russia stereotypes
Hall described meanings as being part of a main message and ideology. Stereotypes try to fix meanings to just one clear view which isn't always the case. Representations can be seen with what is present and absent and how both reflect the ideology of the product.
Good Girls guide to murder - Defies the stereotype of women relying on men and being active and powerful but also references how men are manipulative and stereotyped into using women
Absent representations of disability and the older generation and sexuality
Theory and media: Shirky and articles 02/07/24
L/O: to investigate Shirky's end of audience theory and collect my examples for analysis to develop my understanding
The digital age turned passive
consumption into active participation, where consumers create conversations and reviews on these products and that if they don't follow the feedback and reviews from the two - way conversation, then they run the risk of being boycotted.
Social media can be said to be a major influence on how audiences reply to media makers e.g tiktok with comments and sharing abilities. Shirky also states that the experimental nature of products can be explored - youtube videos can take a small while to edit the video so the ability to suit the audiences needs are way more accessible
Emma Chamberlain - she has a low budget but realistic room that makes the audiences make us feel comfortable
'Emma Chamberlain’s screen
presence seems natural, relaxed
and authentic. This is refreshing for
audiences who are used to actors
playing a role or presenters adopting
a particularly performative set of
speech patterns and mannerisms.'
'A strong argument is that
a primary role of the media is to deliver
audiences to advertisers. YouTube, and its owner Google, rely on advertising
for their substantial earnings and
arguably, celebrity vloggers act as a
promotional vehicle for advertisers and
commercial sponsors. '- fitting Hesmondhalgh and that industries are for profit
Curry and Seaton 9th July 2024
The pursuit
of profit and power leads to a few
very powerful players dominating
an industry and reduces the range,
not the quantity of creative products
available to audiences
'Financial power and
profit lead to market dominance and
a seemingly unstoppable flow of
subscribers and cash. Give the public
what it wants and give it to them
now – as long as you control all the
rights and revenue streams which then later', once they own everything they can up the prices which then limits representations as the mainstream ideologies is what is wanted!
Downside: How with repeating the superhero genre it declined in interest. After black panther and endgame, people got tired of the repetitive nature of the genre and how by not using other features of their brand, disney lost sales
Hesmondhalgh: Risk is minimised with the established actors as well as relating closely to the video game so then the fans still appreciate without losing fans!
Theory and media: Livingstone and Lunt Tuesday 16th July 2024
L/O: Investigate Livingstone and Lunt's theory on regulation and collect key examples for analysis to develop understanding
Regulation is hard as there are so many different aspects of television that make it suitable for one but unsuitable for other audiences
'The varied approaches to regulation
across the different media sectors,
coupled with the almost total lack of
regulatory control for digital media
services, has resulted, Livingstone
and Lunt argue, in a system that has
substantial faults.'
